Vol. 285 No. 1

Written Answers. - Car Retention Charge.

501.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will investigate why a person in County Cork (name supplied) had to pay £323.06 to be allowed to retain his car, in view of the fact that he has left England and now resides permanently in this country.

The motor vehicle which accompanied the person concerned when he changed his place of residence to this country had been in his possession for only a short period and did not qualify for duty-free importation under the provisions relating to transfer of residence, which are set out in Notice No. 153 by the Revenue Commissioners and which require that to be eligible for duty-free admission an article must have been obtained for substantial use outside the State. A copy of the notice is being sent to the Deputy. The amount of £323.06 duty and value-added tax paid was calculated by reference to the value of the car as declared by the importer.
