Vol. 285 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trade Apprentices.

9.

asked the Minister for Labour if he is aware that some semi-State concerns are dispensing with their trade apprentices before the expiration of their apprenticeship year; and if he will seek to have this practice suspended during this time of scarce employment opportunities.

Inquiries by my Department have not revealed any instances of laying-off of apprentices by semi-State bodies. No such lay-offs have been notified to the training authority.

Might I ask the Minister to inquire from the ESB and CIE as to their policies in regard to apprentices and if they have let many go in the past six months or so?

All the information I can give the Deputy is that no information has been received that any have been let go. No notification of any lay-off has been given and notification should be given.

I can supply information about one of these bodies and I shall send it to the Minister.

I should be glad if the Deputy would do so, please.
