Vol. 285 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Offaly Garda Station.

7.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will provide extra gardaí for the Garda station at Clonbullogue, County Offaly, as there has been only one garda there for some time past.

The Commissioner has informed me that the present Garda strength and patrolling arrangements for the Clonbullogue area are reasonably adequate for the needs of the area, having regard to other demands on Garda resources.

Is the Minister aware that there are three parishes involved, including my own, and there is only one little garda on duty there in the morning and no one there in the afternoon? There have been complaints about this.

The Deputy said there was only one little garda on duty. We do not have any little gardaí. I am aware of the situation, but I am advised that the present Garda strength is adequate to meet the needs of Clonbullogue. The needs of all areas as well as Clonbullogue are under review by reason of the management consultancy survey that is under way. This may result in recommendations, and Clonbullogue may be affected, adversely or otherwise. As it stands, the Commissioner is satisfied about the situation there, but the whole situation of the deployment of gardaí is under review.
