Vol. 285 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pornographic Literature.

8.

andMr. Timmons asked the Minister for Justice if he has received a copy of a resolution from Parent Concern regarding the display of pornographic and violent matter in bookshops and stalls; and, if so, the action he intends taking to curb those displays.

The answer to the first part of the question is "yes". I have replied to the letter which conveyed the terms of the resolution and in reply I have mentioned the various provisions of the law that are relevant. In this context I should mention that there is no provision in the law specifically related to the portrayal of violence in publications, though periodical publications may be banned for devoting an unduly large proportion of space to the publication of matter relating to crime.

I am afraid that I have not yet been able to review the law in relation to pornography and related matters and pressure of urgent work makes it unlikely that I will be able to do so for a considerable time yet. I am sure that Deputies will appreciate how difficult it is to frame appropriate legislation in this field and there can be no guarantee that any change in the law would lead to a more acceptable position. I can only say that I will consider the matter as soon as possible.
