Vol. 286 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Medical Research.

18.

asked the Minister for Health if he has any plans to expand medical research.

Grants are made available to the Medical Research Council from the Hospitals Trust Fund to enable it to organise and carry out medical research. The way in which these funds are allocated and the selection of activities to be supported are matters for the council. In recent years, the grants made available to the council have included provision for some expansion in the amount of research being undertaken.

The grant allocation for 1975 is £285,000, which includes £15,000 for expansion of research. I am not yet in a position to make a statement on the 1976 allocation to the council.
