Vol. 286 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Système Internationale Unit System.

10.

asked the Minister for Health if his Department has considered the implication for this country of the implementation of the Système Internationale unit System; the latest date provided by EEC regulations for the implementation of this system; and if his Department have made any projections of the cost of implementing the system.

The implications of the introduction of the SI units system, in so far as the health services are concerned, have been considered by my Department. The relevant EEC directive, which is, of course, of general application throughout the economy, provides for the authorisation of the system for all purposes by 18th October, 1976, and for prohibition generally of the use of non-metric measurements from 31st December, 1977. It is not expected that the implementation of the directive will give rise to difficulty in the health services. It is not possible to give a figure on the cost to the health services of implementing the directive but it is not thought that it will be significant.
