Vol. 286 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Service.

1.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will provide as a matter of urgency on behalf of a firm (name supplied) a telephone in the house of their management officer (name supplied) in Portlaoise, County Laois.

It is hoped to provide service at the residence of the person named about the third quarter of next year after extra equipment has been installed at Portlaoise exchange. The firm concerned already has service and there are a large number of prior applications many of which have stronger claims than the application in question to priority attention.

2.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if, in view of the fact that the equipment has been installed over two years ago, he will indicate when the telephone exchange in Killorglin, County Kerry will be automated; and the reason for the delay in the change over.

Automatic exchange equipment has not been installed at Killorglin. The best estimate I can give for the conversion of Killorglin exchange is four to five years. This is based inter alia on an estimate by the Commissioners of Public Works for completion of a new exchange building at Tralee on which conversion of Killorglin is dependent. Earlier proposals for extension of the Tralee exchange building on the existing site proved impracticable owing to site limitations.

3.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of applications for telephones at present outstanding in the Dún Laoghaire area, County Dublin; and the reasons for the delay in dealing with them.

The number of waiting applications in the Dún Laoghaire exchange area, which comprises most of the Dún Laoghaire Borough area, is about 240. Of these 135 are having attention. The remainder are expected to be attended to progressively during 1976. Local underground cable shortages must be remedied to enable them to be cleared.

Waiting applications in areas adjacent to the Dún Laoghaire exchange area but served by other exchanges will be attended to according as exchange and/or underground cable relief schemes are carried out in 1976 or early 1977.

4.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will provide a telephone kiosk at Mount Heaton, Roscrea, County Offaly.

Kiosks are not being provided in rural areas such as Mount Heaton, Roscrea, where there is no post office.

5.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when he will be in a position to meet the existing requests for private telephones in the Grangemore/Donahies area of County Dublin.

It is expected to meet about 80 of these early next year and to meet the remainder— about 130—progressively between then and the end of the year.

6.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of telephones provided in the Orwell estate, Templeogue, County Dublin, this year.

7.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of applicants awaiting telephones in the new Orwell estate, Templeogue, County Dublin.

8.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of applicants awaiting telephones in the new Greenpark estate, Walkinstown, Dublin.

9.
