Vol. 287 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - European Parliament Protocol.

19.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the direct elections proposed for the European Parliament, persons elected will be able to move to a secondary residence closer to the meeting place of parliament without having to pay duty on any goods they wish to transport there; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy is aware the privileges and immunities enjoyed by members of the European Parliament—that is, the Assembly—are laid down in a special protocol annexed to the Rome Treaty. The application of the terms of that protocol would be a matter for the country in which the secondary residence referred to by the Deputy would be set up.

Can a man bring his furniture with him?

Is the Deputy now throwing his hat into the European Parliament?

Yes. How is it going to be done?

I have a long note here which I can read out, if the Deputy wishes.

Circulate it.
