Vol. 287 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Woodford Canal Development.

33.

asked the Minister for Finance the present position regarding the development of the Woodford Canal in the Erne-Shannon area.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply which was given on 30th January, 1975, regarding the survey of the Ballinamore and Ballyconnell Canal of which the Woodford Canal forms part. The field work of the survey of the portion of the canal wholly in Counties Cavan and Leitrim is virtually completed. In present circumstances it is not possible to carry out the joint survey by the northern and southern authorities of the seven-mile stretch of channel which runs along the Border. The study of the hydrology of the catchment, so as to reconcile as far as possible any conflicting interests of drainage and navigation, has not yet been completed and owing to present commitments I am not in a position to say when it can be completed.

I am not in a position, therefore, to state when a scheme for the Ballinamore and Ballyconnell Canal can be prepared.
