Vol. 287 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Chemical Pesticides.

45.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if, in the light of the European view that the use of chemical pesticides has been widespread over the last 20 years, he will introduce a regulation regarding their use as, in some cases, they have seriously disturbed the biological balance, destroyed beneficial species while harmful species and new varieties of harmful species with even greater resistance have thrived and toxic substances have built up in the soil and in living organisms; and if his Department will keep a constant watch in order to keep in line all the changes affecting the agro-ecosystems.

I am advised that there is no evidence to suggest that the use of agricultural pesticides in Ireland has resulted in the effects mentioned in the question.

The ecological and other considerations associated with the use of pesticides in agriculture are under constant study in my Department. The Department is also at present examining the question of whether any statutory regulations in regard to agricultural chemicals generally would be desirable.

The remaining questions will appear on the Order Paper of the next sitting day of the Dáil.
