Vol. 287 No. 6

Written Answers. - Unemployment Assistance.

300.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare why a person (name supplied) in County Cork was refused unemployment assistance; and how his means were assessed.

Unemployment assistance is not payable to the person concerned as his weekly rate of means, as assessed for unemployment assistance purposes by a deciding officer and subsequently by an appeals officer, exceeds the maximum rate of assistance which would be payable in his case. The applicant is a landholder whose means for unemployment assistance purposes must, because he resides in one of the specified areas of congestion, be calculated at the rate of £20 for each £1 of the rateable valuation of his holding, excluding buildings.

301.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will now arrange to have unemployment assistance or benefit paid to a person (name supplied) in County Cork as he is registering each week at the local exchange.

A claim for unemployment benefit made by the person concerned on 11th December, 1975 was disallowed by a deciding officer on the ground that he was not available for employment other than on one day each week. He has appealed against the deciding officer's decision. An appeal hearing, at which it will be open to him to attend and give evidence on his own behalf, will be arranged as soon as possible.
