Vol. 287 No. 8

Written Answers. - Litter Prosecutions.

162.

(Dublin Central) asked the Minister for Justice the latest figures available for 1974 and 1975 on the number of persons summoned for discarding litter on public streets.

Statistics of prosecutions for the offence of discarding litter on the streets are not available. The cost of specially compiling them—which would involve a considerable amount of staff time in District Court offices throughout the country—would be disproportionate to the value of the information sought.

I should, perhaps, point out that, except possibly in very exceptional cases, the institution of such proceedings is a matter for the local authority rather than the Garda Síochána.
