Vol. 288 No. 1

Written Answers. - Potato Acreage.

76.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if the Government will decide on the number of acres of potatoes which should be planted each year as is done in England and thereby avoid an excessive shortage or surplus which has occurred in spite of the potato price support scheme introduced in 1973.

As the current potato supply situation in Britain shows, regulation of the area of ware potatoes planted is no guarantee against shortages or surpluses. In any event the future organisation of potato marketing here and in the other EEC member states will be greatly affected by the decision of the Council of Ministers on proposals for a common organisation of the potato market which have recently been submitted to the Council by the Commission.
