Vol. 288 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Archaeological Dig.

29.

asked the Minister for Education why workers on the archaeological dig at Wood Quay-High Street, Dublin, have been laid off; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Deputy's question refers to notices which were given to a number of workers employed on excavation at Wood Quay that their employment would terminate on 5th December, 1975. Those notices were not implemented as arrangements were made to retain the workers in question in their employment for a further period. However, the museum's planned programme of excavation on this site is approaching its conclusion and, in view of the progressive diminution of the area to be investigated, it has now become necessary to dismiss some of the workers. The employment of some of the workmen in question was terminated on 6th February, 1976, and the number employed will be further reduced gradually over the next few months.
