Vol. 288 No. 3

Written Answers. - Road and Footpath Construction.

38.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is now in a position to make regulations regarding the widths of road and footpaths in residential areas.

As I indicated to the Deputy in reply to his Question No. 35 of the 24th April, 1974, on the subject, the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act, 1963, does not empower me to make regulations for the construction of roads and footpaths. However, planning authorities may include standards and specifications in that regard in their development plan and many of them have done so. Under section 26 of the Act conditions may be attached to planning permissions specifying standards for roads and footpaths.

I also indicated that at the request of my Department An Foras Forbartha had prepared recommendations for site development works for housing areas and that housing authorities generally had been asked to adopt these standards in their own schemes and to encourage their use in private housing developments. These recommendations of An Foras Forbartha have been published since the previous reply.
