Vol. 288 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - North Clare Phosphate Mines.

13.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when it is proposed to invite tenders to carry out drilling work in North Clare phosphate mines with a view to establishing whether the deposits represent a viable source of phosphate for fertiliser.

I hope to be in a position to invite tenders about the end of next month.

I would like to thank the Minister for his response to the numerous requests I made to him to investigate the potential of the North Clare Mines, particularly his response in 1974 when he initiated an investigation. What I want to ask the Minister is if he is aware that there is at least one Irish company who are willing to tender for the drilling and if he would investigate it.

I had not given thought up to this moment to the matter of who would be able to tender, but I am very pleased that there is at least one Irish company, and I will see that, if the quality of the work and the price are right, it will go to an Irish Company in preference to a non-Irish company.

Is the Minister aware that during the war years a significant estimate was given of the potential between Kilfenora and Doolin?

I am so aware.

Does the Minister expect that if the phosphate is found suitable it will be at a lower price than that imported from North Africa?

It is very difficult, until there is evidence of the extent, workability and quality of the deposit, to give any opinion about price.
