Vol. 288 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Trust Bank.

37.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the difficulties that have been created for other Irish banks by the action of the Central Bank in relation to the Irish Trust Bank; and if he will take steps to alleviate these problems.

39.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will ensure that depositors with the Irish Trust Bank will be compensated through the Central Bank for any loss they may suffer.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 37 and 39 together.

As the House is aware this case is before the High Court and a provisional liquidator has been appointed. In the circumstances it would be inappropriate for me to comment further in relation to the affairs of this bank.

The supervision of the banking system is the function of the Central Bank. The Bank has informed me that it is not aware that any difficulty has been experienced by other banks following its action in relation to the Irish Trust Bank.

Have the Government borrowed any money from it?

The matter is in the hands of the courts and should be left there.
