I have no evidence that excessive profits are being taken on potatoes either at the wholesale or retail levels. I understand that the existing high prices are attributable to a shortage of supplies both in this country and throughout Europe. I do not consider, therefore, that a public inquiry as suggested by the Deputy, would be useful or appropriate.
