Vol. 290 No. 1

Death of a Member. - Expression of Sympathy.

The Members of Dáil Éireann will have learned with deep regret of the death of Deputy Noel Lemass during the Recess. Deputy Lemass was first elected to Dáil Éireann in 1956 and represented the constituency of Dublin South-West. He served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance with responsibility for the Office of Public Works from 1969 to 1973. In that post he showed a deep interest in environmental matters.

Deputy Lemass was a member of the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe between 1966 and 1968 and of the Irish-French and Irish-British Parliamentary Groups. He was also active in municipal affairs having been for some years a member of Dublin Corporation. He had, in addition, an interest in trade union affairs and was a keen sports enthusiast. Deputy Lemass's death has deprived the Dáil, and his constituency of Dublin South-West, of a dedicated public representative and I would ask you, a Cheann Comhairle, to extend to his widow, to his family and to his mother the sincere sympathy of the Dáil.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Members rose in their places.
