Vol. 290 No. 1

Written Answers. - Galway Bay Shipwreck.

78.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if his Department have taken any steps for the removal of the shipwreck Angmering which lies on the Margarita Rocks in Galway Bay; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The removal of the wreck of the Angmering from Galway Bay is not a matter for my Department and I have no statutory powers to remove such wrecked vessels or to order their removal. The removal of a wrecked ship is a matter, in the first instance, for the owner. Where a wreck is stranded in any harbour or tidal water under the control of a harbour or conservancy authority or in or near any approach thereto, the authority may, if in their opinion the wreck is an obstruction or danger to navigation, take possession of, remove or sell the vessel. The Commissioners of Irish Lights have similar powers if there is no appropriate harbour or conservancy authority.
