Vol. 290 No. 2

Written Answers. - County Roscommon Water Schemes.

44.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that approximately 20 miles of water pipe in various group schemes have been laid in the Cloonfad/Ballinlough area of County Roscommon for which there is no water; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

45.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has received a request from Roscommon County Council for the urgent development of Cloonmagunaun springs; if he is aware of the urgency of the matter; and if he will state when work will start.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to reply to Questions Nos. 44 and 45 together.

Roscommon County Council submitted detailed proposals for the augmentation of the Ballinlough/ Cloonfad public water supply system to my Department by the development of Cloonmagunaun springs. It is not possible to say as yet when a decision regarding the scheme will issue to the local authority.

The need for the augmentation work arises because the demand has increased and because tests carried out by the council last summer showed the yield from the existing source was less than originally estimated. Accordingly the council have decided that they cannot put water into feeder mains laid by them or give a supply to further group schemes from the Ballinlough/ Cloonfad system for the present.
