Vol. 290 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Asbestos Health Hazard.

13.

asked the Minister for Health if he has noted that the British Government is to hold a public inquiry into the health hazards arising from asbestos; and if he will make a statement on the position in this country.

I am aware that the British Health and Safety Commission have decided to set up a committee to review the risks to health arising from exposure to asbestos or products containing asbestos.

The risks in handling materials such as asbestos arise mainly in work situations in which workers are protected by the Asbestos Regulations of 1975 made under the Factories Act, 1955, which were enacted and are enforced by the Minister for Labour to whom a question on the subject was directed on Tuesday of this week.

The situation will of course be watched carefully and further action considered in the light of any developments here or abroad.
