Vol. 290 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Deodorants.

14.

asked the Minister for Health if he has noted a report in a British consumers' association magazine (name supplied) linking the use of deodorants with skin problems; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The article on deodorants and anti-perspirants to which the Deputy refers questioned the need for their use and made the point that many people who use them will suffer a skin irritation which may range from mild to severe. It pointed out that, if persons are sensitive to other skin products or household chemicals, there is the possibility that they may also be irritated by deodorants or anti-perspirants. The article advised persons with sensitive skin to be careful about using these articles. This seems sensible advice.

The article also questioned the need for some people to use such preparations at all, advocating soap and water as an effective alternative. It indicated, however, that the persons who were surveyed and who suffered irritation of the skin from the use of these preparations in all cases recovered when they ceased to use them.
