Vol. 290 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Lighting Schemes.

6.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the fact that public lighting is now included in the road programme, his Department will (a) finance all future capital lighting schemes on national roads and (b) contribute to the annual running costs of route lighting on these roads.

The full cost of an approved scheme for the provision or improvement of public lighting on a national road may be met from the Road Fund. Annual running costs are not met and, in view of the demands on the Road Fund for finance for urgent works, especially those designed to protect employment, it would not be appropriate in present circumstances to change this.

The inclusion of public lighting in the programme for road transportation and safety under the new form of local authority estimates is merely part of an arrangement to group various expenditure items of local authorities and was not intended to affect the basis for financing these services.
