asked the Minister for Social Welfare the total number of persons registered as unemployed in each exchange in County Kerry at (a) the end of March, 1974 (b) the end of March, 1975 and (c) the latest date for which figures are available; the number of persons in receipt of unemployment assistance or benefit on each of these dates for each exchange in County Kerry; and whether these figures include persons who are paid at factories and who only sign on receipt of benefit in the factory premises.

The total number of persons registered as unemployed at employment exchanges and employment offices in County Kerry

(a) on 29th March, 1974, was 8,244,

(b) on 28th March, 1975, was 9,804, and

(c) on 30th April, 1976, was 10,670.

The corresponding figures for the live register of unemployed on those dates were (a) 4,355 (b) 5,005 and (c) 6,140. The present composition of the live register was decided upon in 1965 and it takes no account of smallholder applicants for unemployment assistance, persons getting credited contributions during a trade dispute and persons signing to obtain seasonal work.

The number of persons in receipt of unemployment assistance or benefit on the dates mentioned was:

(a) 7,819, (b) 9,472 and (c) 9,617.

The figures given include any persons who received payment of benefit or assistance by special arrangement at their employer's premises.
