asked the Minister for Local Government the names of the local authorities which he stated had failed for many years to carry out a reasonable programme of maintenance of their houses and which are now undertaking ambitious schemes of repairs and structural improvement; and the amounts spent by each such authority in 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975.

The figures shown above for 1975 are provisional, as are also a small number of those relating to 1974 (nine months) and 1973-74. Many of the figures will have to be verified by Local Government auditors in conjunction with the payment of housing subsidy.
Notwithstanding these reservations, it is clear that the expenditure by some local authorities during the past two years on the maintenance and improvement of their dwellings was substantially in excess of the guidelines which have been laid down. The Department is in touch with these authorities, and pending completion of the necessary joint consultations, it would be invidious of me to indicate at this stage the authorities who had failed to carry out a reasonable programme of maintenance of their houses and who are now undertaking ambitious schemes of repairs and structural improvements.
