Vol. 290 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meeting Result.

3.

asked the Minister for Education the result of the meeting between the NIHE governing body and the senate of the NUI.

It is not for me as an observer at the meeting between representatives of NIHE and the NUI to make a statement on the result of that meeting. The representatives of the governing body of NIHE will be reporting on the discussions which took place at the next meeting of the governing body today.

If the governing body of the NIHE decided at their meeting today not to go along with the Minister's proposals in regard to degrees at the institute—which now seems likely in view of statements made in the last few days—what steps will the Minister take in that situation?

Mr. R. Burke

That is a question which I will face if and when the need arises.

Is the Minister aware that the total opposition to his proposals for the awarding of degrees by the NUI continues in Limerick among both the students and the staff? Is the Minister further aware that the students will not accept degrees from the National University?

The Deputy is enlarging on the question.

In these circumstances is the Minister prepared to make any modification whatever to his proposals?

That is a separate question.

No answer.

Does the Minister not agree that if he insists on his proposals he will wreck the wonderful future which the NIHE could ensure for technical education in Ireland?

That would not arise from the question.

I would like to have an answer.

The Minister does not deny it. He knows it. He wants to destroy the institute.
