asked the Minister for Education the total number of untrained national school teachers currently in employment; the number of men, women, lay and religious concerned; the number in each county; the number of such teachers with service of one to five years, five to ten years, ten to 15 years, 15 to 20 years and in excess of 20 years; the purpose and full details of the proposed eight weeks' crash training course for some such teachers; if he has had any prior consultation with the INTO on the proposal; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The following is the information requested:

(a) As of April, 1976, there are 139 persons employed temporarily as untrained national teachers. Their employment is temporary and on a term to term basis pending the availability of a trained teacher to fill the permanent post.

(d) The required data is not available.

(e) The conditions set down for admission to the special course are as follows:

(i) the applicant, being serving in a temporary capacity, must have been among those who received notification from the Department that their recognition would be withdrawn and their service terminated on 30th June, 1975;

(ii) the applicant must have given, in the aggregate, at least five years' service in respect of which salary was paid to her by the Department;

(iii) the applicant must be not less than 30 years and not more than 55 years on 1st January, 1976;

(iv) the applicant's school work must have been assessed as being satisfactory.

Persons who successfully complete the course must pass a practical teaching test carried out by the Department's Inspectors and also pass the Scrúdú Cáilíochta i nGaeilge before being given recognition as trained teachers.

(f) Discussions have taken place with the INTO in regard to the course.

15 of the 139 teachers mentioned at (a) commenced their present employment prior to the 1975/76 school year. The ex-gratia crash course for untrained unqualified teachers to be held in 1976 will not be repeated.
