Vol. 291 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway River Drainage.

12.

asked the Minister for Finance when the Office of Public Works will complete the drainage of the River Nanny at Tuam, County Galway.

The Nanny River was scheduled for treatment under the drainage scheme for the Corrib/Clare catchment area. This work had to be postponed because the existing Tuam waterworks would be damaged by silt. Galway County Council are preparing a new water supply scheme for Tuam and when this has been carried out drainage of the Nanny can be considered again.

When did work stop on this drainage scheme in view of the fact that Galway County Council wanted the water supply for the town of Tuam?

I take it that Galway County Council have been from 1964 to 1976 preparing a water scheme for Tuam?

That is so.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that approximately 67 farmers and 1,200 acres are involved in the completion of this drainage scheme and it appears the scheme is held up due to the inefficiency of Galway County Council. If Galway County Council did their part, would the Board of Works be prepared to spend the money to complete the drainage?

Yes, I can give that assurance but I advise the Deputy to take up the matter with Galway County Council.

Is the Deputy a member of Galway County Council?
