Presumably what the Deputy has in mind is the maximum number of drift-net licences that might be issued in each fishery district as prescribed in the Control of Fishing for Salmon Orders. Prior to the 1973 fishing season there was no limit to the number of drift-net licences which each board might issue. For the 1973 season criteria of eligibility were laid down which curtailed the issue of licences and the numbers permitted for the 1974 and following seasons were the numbers validly issued in 1973.
