Vol. 293 No. 4

Written Answers. - Unemployment Assistance.

93.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware that as little as 10p per day is being paid to unemployed school leavers in Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The amount of unemployment assistance to which an applicant is entitled depends on his marital status, the number of his dependants and on his means. If a single person with no dependants — for example, an unmarried school leaver—living in an urban area is receiving payment at the rate of 10p per day it is because his weekly means for unemployment assistance purposes have been assessed at £8.30. Under the provisions of the Unemployment Assistance Acts such a person would be entitled to payment at the rate of 60p a week, that is the difference between the maximum weekly rate of unemployment assistance (£8.90) applicable in his case and his weekly rate of means (£8.30).
