Vol. 294 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authority Teacher Members.

27.

asked the the Minister for Education the facilities that are accorded to teachers who are members of local authorities and vocational education and other local authority committees to enable them to attend meetings.

National school teachers who are members of school attendance committees, vocational education committees, library committees or school medical service committees established under county, borough or urban councils, may be permitted to absent themselves from school duties in order to attend meetings of such committees on not more than six occasions during the school year, or on not more than ten occasions if the absence on all of these occasions was for the purpose of attendance at meetings of a vocational education committee.

Broadly similar arrangements are approved in the case of teachers of secondary and vocational schools subject to the decision in the first instance of the appropriate school authorities.

Therefore, in the case of teachers who are members of councils there would be permission for them to be absent for only six meetings?

The Deputy's question referred to committees.

It referred to local authorities which must include county councils.

Apparently, I have not given the Deputy all the information he requested in so far as the matter relates to local authorities. I regret this but the information is not given in the reply that was prepared. I shall arrange either to supply privately the information the Deputy seeks or shall be pleased to give it to him in response to a further question.

I should be happy for the information to be sent to me privately.
