Vol. 296 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hospital Bed Days.

8.

asked the Minister for Health if his Department have at any time made an estimate of the number of bed-days taken up in hospitals in the State by those injured in road traffic accidents.

The number of bed days occupied in hospitals by persons who were admitted as a result of road traffic accidents has been estimated at 42,000 for the year 1975. This estimate is based on information sent by the hospitals to the Medico-Social Research Board as part of the board's hospital in-patient survey. Because all hospitals are not yet taking part in this survey, the figure quoted is a tentative estimate.

In view of the 42,000 persons admitted in 1975 would the Minister consider, in conjunction with the Minister for Local Government, making the wearing of seat belts compulsory?

I appreciate the Deputy's concern but it is not my responsibility. He should address a similar question to the Minister for Local Government. I consider what the Deputy is advocating to be desirable.
