Vol. 296 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Arigna Coal Fields.

37.

asked the Minister for Labour if he will make a statement on reports that there is a likelihood that the coal fields in Arigna which are now being worked will be exhausted in five years; and if he will draw the attention of AnCO to the matter so that early plans will be made for the retraining of many of the present work force for future industry established in the area.

The long-term prospects for the Arigna coal fields are still being studied and it would, therefore, be premature to predict at this stage what the position may be in five years' time.

Based on the outcome of that study, I will have discusions with AnCO in the matter.

Could the Minister give any idea of when the long-term investigation will be concluded?

No, I do not know when it is supposed to be ready. I will let the Deputy know as soon as I know.

Would the Minister arrange that his successor be informed so that he will be in a position to move in immediately?

I will make sure the Department is fully informed.
