andMr. MacSharry asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs the number of people employed in his Department in each of the last four years; the number of people employed in each of the same years without having taken part in a public competition; and the number of people employed in the past six months without having taken part in a public competition.

As the information required by the Deputies is in the form of a tabular statement, it is proposed, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Department of Posts and Telegraphs.

Recruitment during the period 1st January 1973 to 31st December 1976.

Column (a): Total numbers recruited

Column (b): Numbers recruited otherwise than by public competition conducted by the Civil Service Commissioners or by the Department. (These were mainly temporary Postmen for the Christmas period (over 2,000 each year), other temporary and part-time Postmen and temporary labourers for engineering work.)
