Vol. 296 No. 5

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Traffic Control.

8.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider appointing more gardaí for traffic control in the Dublin city area, particularly for the maintenance of clearways.

The allocation of duties to members of the Garda Síochána is a matter for the Garda Commissioner. He has informed me that the number of gardaí allocated to traffic duty in Dublin, including duty in respect of clearways, is as large as is possible having regard to the various other demands on the available resources. In August, 1976, eight additional gardaí were detailed for traffic duty in Dublin. The number of gardaí now allocated to the traffic corps in Dublin stands at 70 and they have available a fleet of 19 motorcycles, six patrol cars and two towing vehicles. The Commissioner expects that the effectiveness of the traffic unit will be increased as a result of measures of redeployment which are being implemented and it is also anticipated that the traffic warden service will shortly be in a position to give further assistance to the Garda in respect of clearways and otherwise.
