Vol. 296 No. 5

Written Answers. - Land Allotment.

120.

asked the Minister for Lands the size of holding a farmer can have above which he will not get land from the Land Commission.

Under current land settlement policy, holdings and enlargements are planned to provide family farms of 40 to 45 acres of good land or the equivalent in land of mixed quality. Applicants with holdings below that level are eligible for consideration for enlargements. In the case of the allotment of land acquired under the farmers' retirement scheme to a potential development farmer with a land requirement the area to be allotted would depend on the requirements of the development plan drawn up under the farm modernisation scheme.

121.

asked the Minister for Lands if it is the policy of the Land Commission to allocate land to people who had disposed of agricultural land some short time prior to allocation.

In allocating land the Land Commission take into account the circumstances of each applicant as far as they can be ascertained. As regards an applicant who is found to have sold lands already, the circumstances of the sale —and particularly the reasons therefor —would determine whether or not his application would be regarded less favourably on that account.
