Vol. 296 No. 9

Written Answers. - Smoking-Related Disease Cost.

63.

asked the Minister for Health the cost of treating smoking-related diseases, incurred by hospitals, family doctors or general pharmaceutical services, for any year for which figures are available.

The major diseases which are related to smoking are lung cancer, bronchitis and heart disease. It is roughly estimated that the total cost of treating these diseases in the present year will be £15 million. What proportion of this is for cases of these diseases actually caused by smoking cannot be stated. There are other causative factors also for these diseases.
