Vol. 296 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Laois Coalfield Potential.

11.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the huge increase in oil prices over the past two years, he has initiated any new investigations into the potential of the coalfields in the south Laois area in view of their established wealth and their present potential; and if not, if he will arrange for immediate action in this regard.

The coal potential of the Leinster Coalfield, which includes the anthracite reserves in County Laois, was thoroughly explored in the course of an extensive diamond drilling survey carried out between 1959 and 1963. The survey indicated considerable reserves of minable anthracite but the limited thickness of the seams, coupled with their depth from the surface, discourage colliery operators from undertaking development. A number of mines within the coalfield have ceased production having reached the limit of their reserves. The one surviving mine, Rossmore, closed in 1970 but, with the aid of State assistance reopened in 1974.

I might add that I am at present considering an application for leasing facilities to work State-owned coal in County Laois. The Deputy can rest assured that every effort is being made to encourage interest in the further exploration and development of available reserves.
