Vol. 296 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE Fare Increases.

12.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has received an application from CIE for permission to increase bus and rail fares in Dublin by 25 per cent; and, if so, the action he proposes to take in the matter.

I have received an application from CIE for permission to increase certain fares and rates including bus and rail fares in Dublin. While individual increases vary in size the increases sought in respect of Dublin work out on average at 25 per cent for bus fares and 26 per cent for rail fares. The application has been considered by the National Prices Commission and their report is at present under consideration. I expect that a decision on the application will be announced shortly.

The Minister should consider the introduction of a special rate for those who have to travel to employment in the suburbs. If this is not done people will not be able to afford the increased charges and will have no alternative but to leave their employment. As a result CIE will lose revenue. I would ask the Government to be original and try to alleviate the hard-pressed city bus travellers.

I have noted the Deputy's remarks. I am sure he appreciates that such a decision would be for CIE. If extra subsidisation, in addition to the substantial subsidisation being given by the Government to CIE, were necessary it would be a matter for the Minister for Transport and Power.
