Vol. 297 No. 1

Written Answers. - Furniture Factory Grants.

121.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the grants that are now available for individuals who wish to set up a furniture factory.

The maximum level of grant assistance for new industry generally is prescribed in the relevant legislation, that is, up to 45 per cent in non-designated areas and up to 60 per cent in designated areas; but the grant, if any, which would be given in a particular case would depend on the circumstances of the case. I am informed by the Industrial Development Authority that their present criteria in regard to grants for the furniture industry are designed to encourage the development of a capability to compete under free trade. Applications from new entrants will be considered only for projects that are geared to compete against specifically identified imports or to supply particular export markets.
