Vol. 298 No. 7

Written Answers. - EEC Survey.

100.

asked the Taoiseach the total number engaged in a temporary capacity to do the EEC survey organised by the Central Statistics Office; the breakdown between the Dublin area and the rest of the country; the length of time it will take and the average expected weekly wage; the total number who applied as against the number engaged; and of those engaged the number who were (a) married men (b) married women (c) single men (d) single women and in relation to (b) the number who were wives of civil servants; and of those engaged the number already State-employed.

The total number of persons employed by the Central Statistics Office in a temporary capacity, to carry out the field work in the 1977 labour force survey is 464 consisting of 410 interviewers, 40 field supervisors, eight area supervisors and six temporary clerical assistants. The number of field staff working in the Dublin area is 119. The total number of applications received in relation to the above-mentioned posts was 4,534.

The actual survey field operation, covering the interviewing and preparatory visual surveys covers a period of from six to eight weeks in each of the selected areas and each interviewer is employed for this period of time. Both grades of supervisor however are employed for a longer period —from four to six months.

The area supervisors and field supervisors, which are full-time temporary posts, receive weekly remuneration of £73 and £60 respectively. These officers may also receive terminal bonuses—£125 or £100 respectively. The interviewers who are employed on a part-time basis are paid a fee dependent on the number of householders in their areas. On average, an interviewer should receive a total payment of about £300; this represents an average weekly payment of about £45. The temporary clerical assistants are paid the standard minimum rate for this grade—£38.28 per week.

The following table shows the number of field personnel classified according to marital status:

It is not possible to determine how many married female appointees were the wives of civil servants as such information was not sought on the application forms. On the basis of the information given in the application forms, it would appear that a total of 98 of the 464 appointees were already in State employment, including local authorities.
