May I offer my congratulations to Deputy Browne on his election as Leas-Cheann Comhairle and, belatedly, to you, Sir, on your election yesterday, and say that we know on this side of the House that both of you will fill these posts with impartiality and courtesy. In voting against this motion today we were concerned only to indicate our disapproval of a situation in which, contrary to precedent, the majority party sought and secured both of these posts.
Would the Deputy mind quoting what precedent he has in mind?
The absence of precedent.
The nearest precedent he can think of, perhaps.
My point is that I am not aware of any precedent in recent times, and I would be interested to hear of one.
1973, for example.
In 1973 we did not seek the post.
You gobbled up the lot.
Fianna Fáil did not want the post and we were put in the position, therefore, of nominating somebody for it, which had not been our intention or wish.
Tell us about the Leas-Cheann Comhairle.
We shall not have a debate on this. I thank the Deputy for his remarks.
