Vol. 300 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pension Scheme.

1.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare what plans the Government have for the implementation of a national income-related pension scheme.

The Green Paper on "A National Income-Related Pension Scheme" was published to provide a basis for informed discussion of the whole question of pension provision. As I said in reply to an earlier question, a number of bodies involved in the pensions field have indicated that they intend to make detailed submissions to me in the matter and their views and those of other interested groups will be taken into consideration before decisions are taken on future developments in relation to pensions.

Will the Government be publishing their own Green Paper?

The Green Paper published was a Department of Social Welfare Green Paper and to that extent it represents the previous Government's contribution to the discussion. If there is legislation, as there will be in due course, I could not tell the Deputy at this stage whether we will publish a green or a white paper in advance of that legislation but probably not.
