Vol. 301 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tara Mining Operations.

19.

andMr. Mitchell asked the Minister for Labour if either he or the conciliation services of his Department or any other body acting on his behalf have taken action in relation to the winding down of mining operations at Tara Mines Ltd., Navan, County Meath.

Talks under the chairmanship of an independent mediator who is also a rights commissioner were held as far back as July last aimed at finding a solution to the problems at Tara Mines. The present position is that direct talks are taking place between the parties involved.

Will the Minister assure the House, in view of the importance of the employment in this mine to the economy of County Meath, that he himself will take a personal interest in these proceedings and do everything he can to ensure their successful conclusion?

I certainly will, and I have been taking a very deep interest in them. I am sure the Deputy is not suggesting for a moment that I should intervene while talks are going on that I would hope would reach a satisfactory solution there. I will, of course, be keeping a close eye on the situation.
