Vol. 301 No. 8

Written Answers. - Ballyfermot (Dublin) Policing.

386.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that, despite the best efforts of the local Garda Superintendent, the laneways in the Ballyfermot area are the location of a very serious vandalism problem; and if, as a temporary measure, he will provide extra gardaí to police these laneways until they are closed as planned next year.

The Garda authorities say that extra patrols have been carried out in the areas referred to over the past few months and that the increased level of patrolling will be maintained. I am not in a position at this stage to say if or when extra gardaí will be allocated to the Ballyfermot area but, as already announced, about 300 extra gardaí will complete their training and be available for duty by early January and a substantial number of them will be allocated to the Dublin Metropolitan Area.
