Vol. 301 No. 8

Written Answers. - Guidance Teachers.

427.

asked the Minister for Education the number of guidance teachers in post-primary schools, with separate figures for secondary and vocational schools; the method of appointing and sanctioning such teachers; and the facilities for the training of such teachers.

The total number of qualified guidance teachers at present employed in post-primary schools is 379. Of these 245 are serving in secondary schools, 102 in vocational schools and the remaining 32 in comprehensive and community schools. Guidance teachers are appointed in post-primary schools in precisely the same way as all other teachers in such schools. Facilities for the training of guidance teachers are available at University College, Dublin, by way of a one-year post-graduate course leading to the award of a diploma in Educational and Vocational Guidance and Counselling.
