(1) The bulk of the tobacco revenue is derived from raw leaf imported for manufacture into cigarettes, pipe tobaccos or other products. As the duties on the leaf are collected without reference to end-use it is not possible to furnish accurate statistics of the revenue derived from the separate products. The figures in the second and third columns also take account of imported tobacco (excluding cigars) and cigarettes.
(2) In addition, turnover tax was payable on retail sales in 1970 at the rate of 2½ per cent up to 30th April and 5 per cent thereafter; and, in 1977, V.A.T. at the rate of 10 per cent on retail sales is applicable. Separate figures of receipts of these taxes are not available.
(3) The only figures available in respect of cigars are for the years ended 31st March in 1950, 1960 and 1970 but these figures would not differ significantly from those of the calendar year.
