Vol. 302 No. 2

Written Answers. - Rosslare Harbour Development.

383.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport if he will state in relation to the developments in progress at Rosslare Harbour, County Wexford (1) the total estimated cost (2) the amount of State investment (3) the proposed handling capacity of the harbour facilities in relation to through-put of (a) passengers and (b) commercial vehicles; and the other Departments and agencies involved in the scheme and the nature of their involvement.

1. The estimated cost of the provision of a second roll-on/ roll-off berth at Rosslare Harbour, with associated facilities is £3.63 million. 2. No decision has yet been taken about this aspect. 3. It is not practicable to express in figures the potential capacity of the proposed new berth, which would depend on operating schedules and frequency of service, but the berth would be capable of meeting the estimated passenger and commercial traffic requirements of the shipping services using the port. The design would be such that a further berth could be provided later at minimal extra cost if required. 4. The other bodies currently involved in consideration of the scheme are: (i) Córas Iompair Éireann, the managers of the port, and their consulting engineers; (ii) the Commissioners of Public Works. as my engineering advisers; and (iii) Bord Fáilte Éireann, in relation to tourist promotion and the preservation of coastal amenities.

My Department are also consulting with a number of other Departments about various aspects of the proposed scheme, that is, Departments of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, Environment, Agriculture and Fisheries.
