Vol. 302 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wildlife Advisory Council.

9.

asked the Minister for Fisheries when he proposes to make an order to appoint the Wildlife Advisory Council as laid down in the Wildlife Act, 1976.

The necessary preliminary work in connection with the establishment of the Wildlife Advisory Council is well in hand and on its completion the relevant order will be made by me.

Does the Minister appreciate that the matter of the Wildlife Advisory Council has a particular urgency in view of the recent suggestion that major drainage works should be carried out on the Shannon? This will have a profound effect on the ecology of the whole midlands and put a question mark over various forms of wildlife in their existing habitat. For that reason, if for no other, would the Minister press ahead with the maximum expedition to make sure that the Wildlife Advisory Council is set up and asked forthwith what steps should be taken in order to safeguard wildlife in this area?

That is a very long speech.

I fully agree with the sentiments expressed by the Deputy, particularly in relation to the Shannon basin. I hope to have the order made in early January. We are getting together the personnel for the council. The matter to which the Deputy refers should be undertaken as a priority, having regard to the extent of wildlife in the Shannon basin.

Will the Minister give the House a clear assurance that this matter will be remitted to the council for their consideration as soon as the council is set up?

I give that assurance.
